Archive

Here you will find every page of the reference in order of publication. Each one shows its date and topic, so the page you need is easy to find even if you only vaguely remember it. Below, the old addresses of the domain that we have kept with explanations are listed separately. The archive also suits anyone who wants to read the reference from start to finish: work from the bottom up, from the earliest pages to the latest, and you will see how the sections complement one another. The topics here are the same as in the feed of new pages, so pages on one topic are easy to group together.

An old address is no reason to pretend the former page never existed. We say honestly what used to be there and offer a useful text on our own subject in its place.

— A note in the margin

One line in the archive corresponds to one published page. When a page is substantially revised, it keeps its place in the archive and the change is announced in the feed of new pages. There are no deleted pages in the archive: if a page ever becomes outdated, we will add an explanation to it rather than quietly remove it.

Old addresses of this domain

This domain used to host a publication covering public affairs, and later it carried unrelated advertising. We have kept neither the advertising nor the earlier materials. The address of the former home page has been kept as an information page: it explains what used to be there and gives tips on searching for old texts yourself.

  • New

  • Topics

Four sections: reading, words and expressions, quotations and sources, summarising and writing.

  • Home

A reference on understanding texts: difficult paragraphs, word meanings, quotations, summaries and notes.

Dictionaries are revised, definitions are refined and corpora keep adding new examples of usage, so for a precise answer check the current edition of the dictionary.
